Résumé : |
"Charles and Mary Lamb were a brother and sister who lived in London a hundred and fifty years ago. They were both very kind. They had very many friends and uses to entertain most of London literary society on every Wednesday evening.
At that time children were not allowed to go to the theatre, so they could not see the wonderfyl plays of William Shakespear; Charles and Mary were very fond of children, and together they wrote these Tales from Shakespeare, which are the stories of Shakespeare's plays. You can read others in More Tales from Shakespeare.
This book at once became a great favourite, and has remained so ever since. The Lambs were among the first people to try to write children's books to please and delight children, and not to tell them to wash their faces, or to be quiet and good, perhaps this is why their books have been so popular.
William Shakespeare has been recognized for four hundred years as the greatest poet ever known in Europe. Many people learn English only in order to read his works. He lived from 1564 to 1616. Perhaps you will be able to read Shakespeare's original plays yourself soon." (quatrième de couverture) |
